Charlie Arehart at RIAcon: CF911 ColdFusion Performance Report 2011

I’ll be presenting at RIAcon next weekend: “CF911 ColdFusion Performance Report 2011″

URL: http://www.carehart.org/blog/client/index.cfm/2011/7/30/speaking_at_riacon
I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be presenting at next week’s RIAconconference in the DC area, August 6-7 2011.

My session will be “CF911 ColdFusion Performance Report 2011“, a new talk/concept I’ve created. Here’s the description:

Starting a new tradition, veteran CF troubleshooter Charlie Arehart will present a review of the performance aspects of making various choices when working with ColdFusion, especially in recent version(s) of ColdFusion. Leveraging the important value of real load testing (as opposed to the less accurate conclusions from “large loop” testing), Charlie’s annual report will help attendees appreciate the performance-related improvements of new/changed features, as well some older features where choices can make an important impact. Depending on the timing of the release of “CF next”, the session may cover its new features, but it will certainly cover some things new in CF 9 and 9.0.1.

As I note there, I hope this may become an annual event which I might present at this and/or other conferences. (It’s an idea rooted in a similar presentation made by a former colleague, from my first IT career from 1982-1997, where he presented the annual “Jim Damon model 204 Performance Report”.)

About RIACon

As for RIAcon, I hope you’re considering it. Phil Nacelli and the folks at AboutWeb have been working hard to put together the conference, which in some minds is kind of picking up where CFUnited left off. It will be a more intimate event, much like CFunited was when it first started.

Indeed, some will recognize that the location for RIAcon is across the street from one of the hotels where CFunited was held in its early years, right next to the Twinbrook Metro station in Rockville, MD.

A Personal Connection to the Hotel Location

Even more of a delight for me personally is that the hotel (The Legacy Hotel) is right on the land that was once the location of Congressional Roller Skating Rink (until the late 70′s), where my sister and I (and many friends) spent our teen years pretty much whenever we weren’t in school. Yep, I was a skating nerd: dance, figures, freestyle, and more. Here’s incriminating evidence!

This week’s ColdBox Connection will be our first hosted by a ColdBox Community Member! The ColdBox Team is stepping back give Ben Laube an opportunity to help remind us of the basics as he presents “Introduction to ColdBox”.

If you have been thinking about getting started with ColdBox and wanted to know the easiest way to get started this presentation is for you. Ben will start without any CFML engine installed and take us from Installation to Application in about twenty minutes. This presentation will focus on getting started with ColdBox 3.0 and Railo Express Edition.

Join us Thursday July 21 at 10AM PDT / 1PM EDT to learn how to get started with ColdBox. Connection information can be found here: http://www.coldbox.org/media/connection

ColdFusion MeetUp: Replace Your Iron with a Cloud, with Barney Boisvert

Announcing a new Meetup for The Online ColdFusion Meetup!

What“Replace Your Iron with a Cloud”, with Barney Boisvert

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday August 4 will be “Replace Your Iron with a Cloud”, with Barney Boisvert.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

At Mentor Graphics we’ve just completed the process of moving a number of applications, including www.mentor.com, from dedicated hardware resources to Amazon Web Services.  Best of all, there was almost zero modification to the codebases we migrated.

In addition to the code aspect, I’ll discuss how the non-code bits (load balancing, database clustering, backups, monitoring, etc.) convert as well, since those are all still required regardless of whether you have physical hardware or the cloud under your code.

Finally, I’ll delve into how you can start to really leverage the cloud nature from your application after you’ve migrated off the hardware.  Most of us don’t have the luxury of starting from scratch in the cloud, but once you’ve migrated, it’s not difficult to tweak your applications to really leverage that new found flexibility.

ColdFusion MeetUp: Discover jQuery using the jQuery Matrix, with Phillip Senn

Announcing a new Meetup for The Online ColdFusion Meetup!

WhatDiscover jQuery using the jQuery Matrix, with Phillip Senn

Our 12pm (US ET) talk on Thursday August 4 will be “Discover jQuery using the jQuery Matrix”, with Phillip Senn.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

Are you new to jQuery, or still learning the syntax? If so, Phillip Senn has created the jQuery matrix. In it, he lists every command, along with a corresponding example. In this session, Phillip will offer a tour of the matrix and show its purpose and value.

A challenge with learning jQuery is that you really need to know JavaScript first: but then a challenge in learning JavaScript is that it’s not clear what aspects are replaced by jQuery. The  matrix categorizes every jQuery property and method, and assigns a priority to each: Introductory, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and “Do not use”. Phillip will explain these, and this interactive way to explore the library. We’ll start with a quick tour of the related HTML matrix, and then bridge into how to develop with JavaScript and jQuery.

Your appetite for Git will be thoroughly whet through examples of how to think in terms of the very expanded capabilities that Git provides.
