Announcing a new Meetup for The Online ColdFusion Meetup!

What: “Replace Your Iron with a Cloud”, with Barney Boisvert

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday August 4 will be “Replace Your Iron with a Cloud”, with Barney Boisvert.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

At Mentor Graphics we’ve just completed the process of moving a number of applications, including www.mentor.com, from dedicated hardware resources to Amazon Web Services. Best of all, there was almost zero modification to the codebases we migrated.

In addition to the code aspect, I’ll discuss how the non-code bits (load balancing, database clustering, backups, monitoring, etc.) convert as well, since those are all still required regardless of whether you have physical hardware or the cloud under your code.

Finally, I’ll delve into how you can start to really leverage the cloud nature from your application after you’ve migrated off the hardware. Most of us don’t have the luxury of starting from scratch in the cloud, but once you’ve migrated, it’s not difficult to tweak your applications to really leverage that new found flexibility.

MEETING URL: http://experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup/

DURATION: Approx. 1 hour

RECORDING: All meetings are recorded. The URL will be posted after meeting at recordings.coldfusionmeetup.com

SPEAKER: (provided by the speaker)

Barney Boisvert is a Senior Application Developer for Mentor Graphics Corp in Wilsonville, OR. He has been developing CFML, Java, and Groovy applications for over 10 years, ranging from ecommerce to crisis communication management to data mining and business intelligence. A strong proponent of open source, he has produced several frameworks and packages for CFML developers, as well as contributing to existing projects (including Fusebox, ColdSpring, Hibernate, Groovy, and Prototype). His blog on various technical topics can be found at www.barneyb.com. In his spare time he can usually be found on some mountain road – precariously balanced on two wheels – or eating something delicious.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

A new wave of version control systems is sweeping the development community. They are grouped under the heading of *distributed version control systems* or DVCSs for short. The three prominent DVCS names are Bazaar, Mercurial and Git. But which one should you choose? I’ll show you specifically what Git has to offer above and beyond its cousins in this 50 minute session. Your appetite for Git will be thoroughly whet through examples of how to think in terms of the very expanded capabilities that Git provides. This session will be filled with live demonstrations and thoughtful diagrams to make Git make sense. You’ll walk away inspired to use Git for both your current and upcoming projects.

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday July 14 will be “Introduction to Sass (Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets)”, with Josh Timonen.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

Sass has been growing in popularity since Hampton Catlin first introduced it in 2005. Sass, which stands for Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets, helps you write less-verbose code with better organization.

Originally a Ruby technology, Sass can help organize and streamline any web application’s styling that uses CSS, including ColdFusion projects. You’ll see what Sass has to offer, how to set it up, and how to write it.

Come see what Sass, and it’s new variation SCSS, can do for your styling workflow.

Where are your visitors? They may still be accessing your Web site using their Mac or PC Web browsers–or they might be connecting from their phone, tablet, television or even their refrigerator. To build compelling cross-device experiences that support Web page requests as well as native applications you will probably need to communicate with these devices using a common Application Programming Interface or API.

In this discussion, Aaron Greenlee will discuss API designs (RESTful /non-RESTful), considerations for bootstrapping your Web Page on desktop/mobile devices and ultimately demonstrate different techniques that you can use to implement your own API. The discussion will touch on security, performance under stress maintenance. The concepts reviewed will be applicable to any framework or programming language; however, the discussion will specifically demonstrate how ColdFusion 9.0, ORM and the ColdBox framework were leveraged to create a powerful API that can be consumed by any device.

MEETING URL: http://experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup/

Following his passion for coding, he returned to Web development in 2008 and currently supports accounts such as Adobe and Time Warner Cable for WRECKINGBALL.
