Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday February 2 will be a “Cloudy with a Chance of Tests”, with Mike Henke.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

We will introduce CI (continuous integration) concepts and benefits. Hopefully you have seen presentations over ant, setting up Jenkins, unit testing and refactoring your code. I always walk away thinking this is awesome but it can be a daunting process to get everything working in one step. This presentation will walk you through a bridge, an intermediate step, you can use immediately in your projects to get usable feedback from Jenkins on your cfml code.

Lack of integration is a problem in any IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Lack of integration and visibility cause problems within your organization. Point to point integration like ticket systems are errors prone and costly like your ticket system. After this session you will better understand this problem and see how to increase communication and awareness all within your Eclipse based editor like ColdFusion Builder.

(US ET) talk on Thursday August 11 will be “Introduction to Caching”, with Daria Norris.
TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

Caching is such a deep and complex subject that it can be difficult to know where to begin. This session will cover the basics of caching in ColdFusion from using page and query caching to using CFCs to cache data and functions into a persistent scope to create a service, as well as the new caching functions in ColdFusion9. We will discuss the pros and cons of each solution and workarounds for caching and refreshing the cache as you need it. You’ll be amazed at the difference caching can make for your websites.
I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be presenting at next week’s RIAconconference in the DC area, August 6-7 2011.

My session will be “CF911 ColdFusion Performance Report 2011“, a new talk/concept I’ve created. Here’s the description:

Starting a new tradition, veteran CF troubleshooter Charlie Arehart will present a review of the performance aspects of making various choices when working with ColdFusion, especially in recent version(s) of ColdFusion. Leveraging the important value of real load testing (as opposed to the less accurate conclusions from “large loop” testing), Charlie’s annual report will help attendees appreciate the performance-related improvements of new/changed features, as well some older features where choices can make an important impact. Depending on the timing of the release of “CF next”, the session may cover its new features, but it will certainly cover some things new in CF 9 and 9.0.1.

As I note there, I hope this may become an annual event which I might present at this and/or other conferences. (It’s an idea rooted in a similar presentation made by a former colleague, from my first IT career from 1982-1997, where he presented the annual “Jim Damon model 204 Performance Report”.)

About RIACon

As for RIAcon, I hope you’re considering it. Phil Nacelli and the folks at AboutWeb have been working hard to put together the conference, which in some minds is kind of picking up where CFUnited left off. It will be a more intimate event, much like CFunited was when it first started.

Indeed, some will recognize that the location for RIAcon is across the street from one of the hotels where CFunited was held in its early years, right next to the Twinbrook Metro station in Rockville, MD.

A Personal Connection to the Hotel Location

Even more of a delight for me personally is that the hotel (The Legacy Hotel) is right on the land that was once the location of Congressional Roller Skating Rink (until the late 70′s), where my sister and I (and many friends) spent our teen years pretty much whenever we weren’t in school. Yep, I was a skating nerd: dance, figures, freestyle, and more. Here’s incriminating evidence!

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday August 4 will be “Replace Your Iron with a Cloud”, with Barney Boisvert.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

At Mentor Graphics we’ve just completed the process of moving a number of applications, including www.mentor.com, from dedicated hardware resources to Amazon Web Services. Best of all, there was almost zero modification to the codebases we migrated.

In addition to the code aspect, I’ll discuss how the non-code bits (load balancing, database clustering, backups, monitoring, etc.) convert as well, since those are all still required regardless of whether you have physical hardware or the cloud under your code.

Finally, I’ll delve into how you can start to really leverage the cloud nature from your application after you’ve migrated off the hardware. Most of us don’t have the luxury of starting from scratch in the cloud, but once you’ve migrated, it’s not difficult to tweak your applications to really leverage that new found flexibility.

MEETING URL: http://experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup/

What: Discover jQuery using the jQuery Matrix, with Phillip Senn

Our 12pm (US ET) talk on Thursday August 4 will be “Discover jQuery using the jQuery Matrix”, with Phillip Senn.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

Are you new to jQuery, or still learning the syntax? If so, Phillip Senn has created the jQuery matrix. In it, he lists every command, along with a corresponding example. In this session, Phillip will offer a tour of the matrix and show its purpose and value.

A challenge with learning jQuery is that you really need to know JavaScript first: but then a challenge in learning JavaScript is that it’s not clear what aspects are replaced by jQuery. The matrix categorizes every jQuery property and method, and assigns a priority to each: Introductory, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and “Do not use”. Phillip will explain these, and this interactive way to explore the library. We’ll start with a quick tour of the related HTML matrix, and then bridge into how to develop with JavaScript and jQuery.

MEETING URL: http://experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup/

DURATION: Approx. 1 hour

RECORDING: All meetings are recorded. The URL will be posted after meeting at recordings.coldfusionmeetup.com

SPEAKER: (provided by the speaker)

After graduating with degrees in Computer Science and Journalism, Phillip worked for 25 years using various dialects of BASIC as well as teaching computer programming at two community colleges. Beginning in 2003, he transitioned to the HTML/CSS/ColdFusion/SQL Server stack, having missed the fun you guys enjoyed prior to CF7. From 2003-2006, he earned a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies and now splits his time between Atlas Computer Resources and teaching as an adjunct to Lenoir-Rhyne University. Of late, he’s been immersing himself in JavaScript and jQuery and has a bit of an old school viewpoint.

WHEN: Thurs. August 4, 12:00pm US ET (UTC/GMT-4)

What time is that for you? The following link shows [ what the time would be for you ]. Here’s [ another option ] that shows the time as US ET, and lets you choose your city from the list offered to see what time that is in your own timezone.

DOWNLOADABLE RECORDINGS:

In addition to the streaming recording posted immediately after the meeting, we now also post recordings at [ Vimeo ] usually within a day of the meeting.

LOGGING IN: When you login to the Connect room (the experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup link above) to view the meeting, PLEASE USE THE “LOGIN AS GUEST” option, and USE YOUR NAME, but do NOT attempt to use your meetup.com username/password or any Connect account. Just sign in as a guest.

RSVP, but only if coming: We do appreciate folks RSVPing if they plan to come (using the link on this email or at the meetup site), though it’s not mandatory and it’s not a commitment. But there’sno need to RSVP if you can’t make it let alone explain why you can’t. With over 2,600 members, no worries.

FEEDBACK/MEETING DISCUSSION: Members will receive an email after the meeting or can click a link on the event page to offer. Note also the meeting-specific discussion area there at the bottom, in addition to the one-chance feedback feature on the right. Feel free to engage in discussions about the meeting topic.

ADD THIS TO YOUR CALENDAR: Want to add this event to your own personal calendar? After logging in here , you’ll see an option at the top of the event page, just below the event title, saying, “Export”, which offers calendar downloads for Outlook, iCal, Google, and Yahoo calendars. (Note that the calendar entry created will show the event taking 2 hours. That’s a default that meetup.com has chosen, which I can’t change. The meetings are generally about an hour, though often go as much as 30-45 minutes longer with Q&A and chat.)
