ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our 12pm (US ET) talk on Thursday Mar 18 will be “Making Bad Code Good – 2010 edition”, with Dan Wilson.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: (provided by the speaker)

This presentation picks up where my 2009 Making Bad Code Good presentation leaves off. Same great concept with all new code samples and techniques.

If you work on a legacy application, or on code built by lots of developers over the years, you likely laugh your way through this presentation. I promise to be thought provoking and challenge the way you write code. In this session, we’ll look at lots of code samples and walk through making incremental changes to speed development, reduce errors and make life easier for everyone involved.

Ideas and concepts in this presentation will help you improve your existing applications and write more maintainable code.

SPEAKER: (provided by the speaker)

As principal partner of DataCurl LLC, Dan Wilson runs both the consulting practice and ChallengeWave.com, a way to help employees start and stick with healthier lifestyles.

Before launching DataCurl, Dan held numerous senior program and development positions in such industries as Technical Consulting, Health Care, Online Publishing and Government Contracting.

Dan is an avid participant in technology communities; an Adobe Community Professional, manager of the Triangle ColdFusion User Group in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Managing Director of the popular Model-Glue framework and contributor to numerous open source projects based on ColdFusion, Flex and AIR platforms.

Dan presents on ColdFusion, Flex and Rapid Development Techniques at popular conferences around the world. You can find his thoughts on ColdFusion, Flex, AIR and other technology matters at http://www.nodans.com and some occasional ramblings on food at http://blog.chefdanwilson.com.

When not in front of a computer, you can find him biking, hiking, surfing, playing volleyball and helping small businesses improve their sales and marketing.

RECORDING: As always, the meeting will be recorded, and the recording URL will be posted after the meeting at http://recordings.coldfusionmeetup.com.

PODCAST/DOWNLOADABLE RECORDINGS:
A downloadable FLV file will be made available after each meeting, offered as a link from the recordings page. As for creating other file formats (such as mp3, mp4, etc.), you can find discussion of the challenges creating such downloadable recordings here: http://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/pages/Challenges_creating_downloadable_recordings/.

LOGGING IN: When you login to the Connect room (the experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup link above) to view the meeting, PLEASE USE THE “LOGIN AS GUEST” option, and USE YOUR NAME, but do NOT attempt to use your meetup.com username/password or any Connect account. Just sign in as a guest.

RSVP, but only if coming: We do appreciate folks RSVPing if they plan to come (using the link on this email or at the meetup site), though it’s not mandatory and it’s not a commitment. But there’s no need to RSVP if you can’t make it let alone explain why you can’t. With over 1,900 members, no worries. :-)

FEEDBACK/MEETING DISCUSSION: Members will receive an email after the meeting or can click a link on the event page to offer. Note also the meeting-specific discussion area there at the bottom, in addition to the one-chance feedback feature on the right. Feel free to engage in discussions about the meeting topic.

ADD THIS TO YOUR CALENDAR: Want to add this event to your own personal calendar? Click the link on the top of the event page, below the event title, saying, “Export to a calendar”, which offers calendar downloads for Outlook, iCal, Google, and Yahoo calendars.

Installing ColdFusion 9 on Windows 7 64-bit and IIS 7.5

Kumar Shah has a nice article about installing ColdFusion 9 on a Windows 7 64-bit with IIS.

I had some of his problems when I tried to install CF9 on my Windows 7 64-bit, but I was less patient than he and I gave up; decided to uninstall IIS and switch it for Apache.

Now I have my CF9 working fine with Apache. Reading his article, I might try to go back to IIS to test it.

Here is Kumar’s article.

Multiple Files Upload Tutorial

Very useful tutorial on multiple files upload by Adam Presley using jQuery and Uploadify.

I followed the tutorial and it worked fine, so I’m attaching it on a zip file for those who are lazy to follow it.

Fusebox 5.51 With MVC Tutorial Part 1

I work with Fusebox framework since its version 2. Now we are at version 5.51. I decided to write this tutorial to help some friends who haven’t got into Fusebox yet but are anxious to jump into the bandwagon, just don’t know how to start. I recommend Jeff Peter’s books on Fusebox for those who really want to take advantage of this framework:

UTF-8 Files With BOM

I was reading a blog by a Brazilian colleague about the BOM (Byte Order Mark) bytes in UTF-8 files, and I found it interesting to translate a summary. With Igor Escobar’s due authorization, of course, here is what I found to be of good tutorial value:

8 Ways How Sex Compares to the Job Search

I got this message below from Neal Rodriguez, and I decided to post it here so my readers can also access his interesting post:

Hi Ricardo,
I read your post yesterday on job hunting, “Twitter Is Good For Your Job Search.” I don’t know if you’ve seen this yet, but I wrote a story on the Huffington Post on how the job search compares to sex; I add a video on how I kept an income through the job search by selling Avon lipstick and delivering pizza pies up 21 flights of steps.
Anyway, I thought you and your readers would be interested in it.
